Officials of the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources seized a large aquarium of larger than legal size on the Wolf River, Shawano. The fish measured 87.5 inches in length and weight of more than 240 inches, believed to be the largest lake fish ever caught in the United States. Experts estimate that this specimen is about 125 years old, meaning it may be the oldest freshwater fish ever recorded.

After being tagged by the DNR fishing team, the fish is released back into the water to complete its spawning cycle. As part of their population research, the DNR often tags and releases populations, and the Lake Winebago system is home to the most extensive concentration of lake populations globally.

Furthermore, to support robust recovery initiatives in other areas of Wisconsin and other states, a number of spawning eggs and juveniles were collected. Data from recent years shows that the system’s population of large fish is increasing and that larger numbers of fish are reaching maturity.

The record-breaking female warrior has lived through many interesting times. To put these things into perspective, Sturgeon biologist Ron Bruch has created a timeline that highlights the key stages in the fish’s life:

1887 – Sturgeon is hatched. Grover Cleveland is the president of the United States and host of Buffalo Bill Cody’s Wild West Show.

1914 – This fish was 27 years old and gave birth for the first time. Later that year, developments in Europe sparked the start of World War I.

1915 – Wisconsin conducted a massive harvest across the state to protect its citizens.

1932 – Fish was 45 years old. The state held its first modern season at Winппebago Lake. Amelia Earhart became the first woman to fly solo across the Atlantic Ocean.

1945 – In its 58th year, this fish breeds for the eighth time. World War II followed.

1969 – This 82-year-old fish has lived through 38 seasons on Lake Winebago and 10 seasons on the Upper Lakes. Neil Armstrong walked on the moon.

1990 – Milwaυkee native Dan Folz retires as Strgeon biologist and is replaced by Ron Bruch. The Soviet Union broke υp.

2012 – This fish was 125 years old when it was spawning for the 25th time and was captured by DNR teams at Shawano Dam. Ryan Koenigs was named Ron Bruch’s successor as a great biologist.
