The new Porsche 911 GT3 R rennsport offers the experience of driving a nine-eleven based race car in its most primitive form.

At Rennsport Reunion 7, the latest version of the Porsche 911—the GT3 R rennsport—was unveiled. This follows the recently launched Porsche 911 S/T, confirming that the German automaker’s 75th anniversary will go down in history as one of the best birthday parties ever .

Bearing the name of the event it presides over, the Porsche 911 GT3 R rennsport unquestionably challenges conventional 911 thinking. It’s wild to think how Porsche pulled it off, considering the capabilities and raw materials of the latest 911 GT3 RS as a production car and even how the aforementioned S/T, in its own way, takes things even further .

It turned out to be something so special, that in the end, the Rennsport GT3 R ruled out any street legality due to its derivative nature of the GT3 R race car. Because it was “not a race car” and could not be certified for use on public roads, the Rennsport GT3 R exists in a gray area where they are best suited for private collectors — a super limited production run of just 77 units , priced at a cost per unit. worth 1,046,000 USD , all of which determine the fate of such a car. However, we can also live vicariously through those who have the means to tow their unicorn to events, meets or maybe even motorsport venues to participate in unlicensed “gentlemen’s” races where — at least on paper — the Rennsport GT3 R would absolutely dominate the track. One can only hope to witness this in life, never mind, being the lead actor in such a dream scenario.

Performance & Chassis

Among several notable features, the GT3 R rennsport uses a special 4.2L flat-six engine , previously exclusive to the race car on which it is based. No longer bound by series rules and restrictions, the naturally aspirated boxer makes 612 horsepower — up from the GT3 R’s 557 horsepower — and is now hitting the speed limit 9,400 rpm . The exhaust note is as mesmerizing as you can imagine.

Porsche says a number of tuning methods and the use of bespoke pistons and cams were what was needed to unleash the unit’s true potential. Combined with all this madness is a 6-speed sequential dog-type transmission . The GT3 R rennsport makes the most of the same chassis components as the race car, still benefiting from 5-way KW suspension, AP Racing brakes, Michelin Pilot Sport M S9 tires and other exotic racing equipment . As a 992 generation variant, the front and rear double wishbone setup also continues to be a highlight of the car.

Body & Style

Many consider the GT3 R rennsport to be the spiritual successor to the Porsche 935 launched in 2019, which itself was a car inspired by the 935/77 “Moby Dick” Brumos Porsche raced at Daytona 24H, circa 1978. Conspiracy theorists will also be quick to point out that the Porsche 935 was also launched at the previous Rennsport Reunion and that it was also limited to just 77 units . Dun-dun-dun.

But there’s no guessing about its styling, as the Rennsport GT3’s family pedigree is undisputed. The Martini Racing color schemes are the clearest homage to its predecessors, as are the angular wheel arches and whale-tail rear spoiler. In reality, though, every design cue has been reimagined to some degree, making its silhouette radically different from its predecessors and the GT3 R race car.

First, the front has been revised with unique ducts and intakes. From the side profile you will be able to see the stunning set of 18 inch BBS wheels specially made for the GT3 rennsport. At the rear, there’s a more streamlined rear apron that seamlessly integrates with the rear wing assembly, with an LED light bar accentuating the aggressive yet minimalist-looking rear section. Inside, there’s just a driver’s seat, a bunch of racing gear—digital and otherwise—and a competition roll cage. The entire car weighs only 1,240 kg .

Price and availability

The new Porsche 911 GT3 R rennsport will cost more than a million dollars. However, the wide range of available paint colors and other bespoke trim options means the majority of models will have a price tag in excess of the previously stated $1,046,000 price tag. Only 77 units will reach Porsche’s most valuable customers, sometime early next year.
