The German team made a surprising decision about Kroos

Contrary to initial predictions, Toni Kroos was not chosen as Germany’s captain for EURO 2024.

Bild revealed that coach Julian Nagelsmann chose Ilkay Gundogan, Joshua Kimmich and Thomas Muller to be the captain of the German team at EURO 2024. Gundogan will be the number one captain, while Kimmich and Muller will play the vice-captain roles.

If Gundogan does not play, the remaining two players currently playing for Bayern will wear the “Mannschaft” armband. This decision by coach Nagelsmann surprised many people, because it was previously reported that Kroos would wear the German captain’s armband at EURO 2024.

Kroos in the national team shirt was predicted to change many important positions in the German team, especially Gundogan’s “conductor” position.

However, coach Nagelsmann’s decision shows that he still wants to keep the power structure of the German team over the past two years, even when Kroos returns to the squad.

The fact that Gundogan continues to wear the German captain’s armband shows that the Barca midfielder is likely to still start for the host country of EURO 2024. Kroos is also unlikely to start even though he just had an impressive season with Real Madrid.

At EURO 2024, Germany is in Group A and will play the opening match against Scotland on June 15. After that, they encountered Hungary and Switzerland respectively.
