The Ford F-150 Lightning is the most anticipated car of 2024

During Ford’s special party in Charlotte to kick off the 2024 racing season, company CEO Jim Farley revealed a new “electric vehicle demonstrator” that will tackle Pikes Peak. Details about that house were not mentioned and they remain largely unmentioned. However, at least we know it will be an F-150 Lightning. But you won’t see it at your local Ford dealership.

Ford shared a single teaser image on social media on Friday, showing the front of a vehicle hidden under storage bins. It’s low, wide and has a wild spoiler at the back like on Bonkers’ electric SuperVan. In fact, if Ford hadn’t specifically said this was an F-150 Lightning, our minds would have gone straight to some version of the SuperVan other than the current 4.2 model. But this is a truck, and clearly, Ford is applying some of the lessons learned from its blazingly fast truck.

This mountain racer could be a variant of the Lightning Switchgear, a unique prototype designed to explore on- and off-road performance styles for electric trucks. We got close to Switchgear Back in January, taking an off-road trip with Vaughn Gittin Jr. helm. It’s called the Switchgear because the same truck – with minor changes to the suspension and tires – is designed to handle corners the same way it handles dirt-road jumps.

However, Ford did not create two versions of the Switchgear. The same prototype could fill other roles, meaning we’ve only seen the off-road version in person. In the meantime, a Ford representative told us that would be set for a later date, which would make for good timing for Pikes Peak.

AɄoʋe rendering taken from Ford’s Switchgear press kit, shows what the road will look like. Obviously there are quite a few differences between this and the trailer, especially that wing and what can connect from the cab to the back, not unlike what we see on the SuperVan. If this new Lightning demonstrator is used on the Switchgear, Ford is sure to take it to the extreme.
