Fans criticized Cristiano Ronaldo when the striker said that the Golden Ball and FIFA The Best had lost credibility.
Cristiano Ronaldo’s latest statements about the reliability of the Ballon d’Or and FIFA The Best awards have not gone down well with some fans, who believe that the Portuguese player is jealous of Lionel Messi won both awards recently.
Messi won the 2023 Golden Ball when he carried Argentina to a great victory at the 2022 FIFA World Cup. He was also voted the Best FIFA 2023 Men’s Player recently ahead of Erling Haaland and Kylian Mbappe.
In a recent interview with Record, Ronaldo was asked about the controversy surrounding Messi winning FIFA’s prestigious individual award. The Portuguese striker responded by claiming that the Golden Ball and The Best awards are losing prestige.
Apparently, Ronaldo’s comments did not go down well with some fans, one of whom reacted furiously on platform X (formerly Twitter):
One person said: “There is always a move of disapproval when Leo Messi wins. The truth is that Messi was way above his level all day.”
Another fan commented: “Like a crying baby.”
Meanwhile, an account named Ashutosh Shrivastava quipped: “If you feel uncomfortable about something, remember that Ronaldo thinks the Dubai Golden Ball is more prestigious than the Ballon d’Or and FIFA The Best.”
Notably, Ronaldo has won the Golden Ball five times and won the FIFA The Best award twice in his career. But CR7 affirmed that he no longer believes in these awards.
“I think, in some ways, the Ballon d’Or and The Best are losing prestige. That doesn’t mean Messi, Haaland or even Mbappe aren’t worthy. I simply don’t believe in these awards anymore. And it’s not because I won Globe Soccer. But those are the facts, those are the numbers.”
“And the numbers don’t lie. They can’t take this trophy (for top scorer of the year) away from me because it’s real. So it makes me even happier,” Ronaldo confirmed to Record.
Ronaldo ends 2023 as the top scorer with 54 goals for Al Nassr and the Portuguese national team across all competitions.
