Lille’s Portuguese coach Paulo Fonseca responded to Cristiano Ronaldo calling the Saudi Arabian National League superior to Ligue 1.
Lille coach Paulo Fonseca has shared his thoughts on compatriot Cristiano Ronaldo’s comments regarding the quality of French Ligue 1. Earlier this week, the striker on Al Nassr’s staff said that the Saudi Pro League is at a higher level than the country’s top tournament in Luc Lang.
Accordingly, Lille’s coach refused to participate in a long discussion when asked about this issue but also thought that Ronaldo was behaving badly, Fonseca said:
“I don’t think what Ronaldo said is good. I don’t want to compare. If he feels happy in Saudi Arabia, I’m happy for him too. There are things that don’t deserve to be answered… I’m wasting time answering them.”
Elsewhere, famous sports statistics site Opta has provided data to prove that Cristiano Ronaldo’s statement is unwise and that the French National Championship is still much better. According to Opta’s power rankings, no more than five Saudi Pro League teams found a place in the top 24 in Ligue 1, with Al Hilal coming out on top in 8th place.
Ronaldo conquered Europe, winning the UEFA Champions League five times before heading to the Middle East in 2023. The last time the striker played at the top level on the old continent was in the colors of Manchester United, where he witnessed His contract was torn up after fierce conflicts with coach Erik ten Hag.
Al Nassr shocked the world when they signed the 38-year-old and Ronaldo immediately made a strong impression in the Saudi Pro League. This season alone, he has 20 goals and 9 assists in 18 appearances for Al-Awwal Stadium in the National League, a great statistic considering his age.
