Portuguese star Cristiano Ronaldo caused a storm when he loudly criticized football’s most prestigious individual awards including the Golden Ball and FIFA The Best.
Argentinian star Lionel Messi is the most recent winner of the Ballon d’Or award. This is the 8th Golden Ball that the striker currently playing for Inter Miami has won, more than any other player has ever won this award. It’s even more remarkable when Messi surpasses competitors like Erling Haaland or Kylian Mbappe. Surprisingly, Al Nassr striker Ronaldo did not even make the shortlist for the award.
In a recent interview with Record newspaper in Portugal, Cristiano Ronaldo criticized football’s most prestigious individual awards including the Golden Ball and FIFA The Best. The former Real Madrid striker, who won the Golden Ball five times, said: “The Golden Ball and FIFA The Best are losing prestige. Not to say that Messi isn’t worthy, or Haaland or even Mbappe… but the statistics are there and numbers never lie. You have to look at the whole season.”
Also added, the Portuguese international scored 54 goals in 59 appearances in 2023 at both club and national team levels. However, Ronaldo only won the Best Scorer award in 2023 at the recent Globe Soccer Awards ceremony held in Dubai, UAE.
