RECORD: English clubs have points deducted 3 times in the 2023/24 season

According to a report from The Sun, the traditional English club Reading will have their third point deduction of the season

This season, the Reading club – a team rich in achievements and tradition in English football – was deducted one point in August for violating EFL regulations, along with three more teams being suspended.

The following month, they were deducted an additional three points after failing to deposit 125% of their monthly wage bill into their account by the date determined by the EFL.

According to Reading Chronicle, Ruben Selles’ team will now have 2 more points deducted. They claim that in 2023, the Royals were more than 100 days late on payments to HMRC, with EFL regulations prohibiting more than 80 days.

This third additional point deduction will cause Reading to fall to 19th place on the League One table and they will be only 3 points above the relegation group. This point deduction is the fifth time Reading has been deducted points in the past three years. They have currently had a total of 18 points deducted, from the time they were still playing in the Championship.

Notably, Reading’s three point deductions in one season created an unprecedented record in English football. Reading fans often protest against owner Dai Yongge this season.

Over the past year, Reading has encountered too many problems. In September, they were suspended for a match against Burton after fans threw several tennis balls onto the court. The players were then led down the tunnel by security forces when the situation became too chaotic

In January, thousands of Reading spectators rushed onto the field in the 16th minute to express their opposition to owner Dai Yongge. This is considered a consequence of Reading being deducted 16 points for violating financial fair play laws, as well as the fact that the Chinese owner wants to sell the club.

Owner Dai Yongge previously owned Chinese Super League club Beijing Renhe – which dissolved in 2021 after dropping to China League One. He then bought 75% of Reading’s shares in May 2017.
