Man City suddenly stopped contract negotiations with Phil Foden

Phil Foden is currently enjoying his best season in a Manchester City shirt, scoring 18 goals and providing 10 assists in 41 appearances in all competitions.

At the age of 23, Foden has made a total of 258 appearances for Man City since November 2017, scoring 78 goals and providing 51 assists. He has won 16 club titles, including 5 Premier League titles and 1 Champions League trophy, playing an important role in Man City’s historic treble-winning season.

One of Foden’s notable achievements came when he was praised by coach Pep Guardiola as the best player in the Premier League after the recent derby match with Manchester United.

In October 2022, Foden extended his contract with City until the summer of 2027, reportedly tripling his weekly salary to around £200,000.

Recent information suggests that Man City has opened negotiations with Foden about a new agreement. However, according to Football Insider, the club are expected to postpone further negotiations until the end of the current season.

It is understood that all parties involved are confident that a permanent agreement will be reached by the summer. The only sticking point seems to be Foden’s desire for a more central role under Pep Guardiola in the coming period.

Speaking to mancity.com, Foden said: ‘These are the most stable games I’ve ever played. I also played in a new position, sitting deeper, with more midfielders around me and I really liked that.”

“I’m enjoying this season in good form so I want to maintain that. Nothing better. For me, it gives me more freedom, more touches on the ball and more involvement. I really enjoyed playing there’.

Foden added: “I wouldn’t say I’m world class, I think I have potential and that’s special for me.

Foden is hoping to end the season with a bang as Man City chase another treble, while also aiming to make an impact with England at Euro 2024 this summer.
