At the beginning of this season, Liverpool received a lot of criticism for not playing convincingly enough. That’s why he had to discuss with the players before the big battle with Man United at Anfield in December.
Klopp: MU draw is a turning point to help Liverpool win the championship |
“I loved the match against Man United. We didn’t win, the score was 0-0. But that was the day our comprehensive counter-pressing mentality was established.
That’s what I asked for before the match. I said everything was good so far, we were new together, we needed to find a way. You cannot ask for counter-pressing when you play with 10 or 9 players. We had to get through the matches in different ways. But before the match against Man United, we talked more specifically about pressing.
You cannot receive the ball and then kick it straight into the opponent’s goal. But if you win the ball in the opponent’s half then you are more likely to have a shot. That was the explanation and from then on, the season changed the way we wanted it to.
Before that was a strange period. We got the results but I kept hearing that ‘Liverpool won but not convincingly’. I remember the match against Man United like it was yesterday. It was a pre-match meeting and the players were receptive. Since then, we have continuously had good performances.”
Liverpoolhas collected 30 out of 39 points since December 17. However, Klopp still requires his players to improve their performance if they want to win the championship. He also felt unhappy when reporters said that the match against Sheffield United was an opportunity for Liverpool to improve their goal difference.
“Our biggest enemy is the wrong attitude, if we show it. And a key point in that is thinking about how many goals you will score against your opponent. It will not happen. I want to win the match first. The score is not what concerns me at the moment.”
