According to a survey of 1,000 US adults by nail fashion specialist Bundle Monster, one in six people try to imitate the nail colors and designs they see on celebrities’ nails.

Currently, 94% consider getting a manicure a luxury but also a necessity. 54% believe that nail care is as important as hair care.

55% get pedicures about 3 times a month and 35% choose to get pedicures once a month.

Practicality plays a role when shaping nails. What is today are short, round nails (42%) and short, square nails (38%).

54% think long and pointed claws are an old shape.

67% spend up to $400 a year just on manicures. 11% have actually taken time off work to get a manicure or pedicure.

And it’s not your grandma’s mani-pedi anymore. Gone are the standard polishes. Forty-six percent usually get a French manicure. 26% love trendy pastel colors and 22% like bright, fun colors. Only 17% said they preferred artificial nails.

“We find that many women see their nails as an extension of themselves and it gives them identity,” said Carol Wu, vice president of marketing at Bundle Monster.

‘They want to experiment with different designs, colors and effects. Nail art itself is a fashion statement and now more than ever, it is as important as the fashion style one is wearing.’

46% of women say they prefer to do their own nails. 80% have up to 20 different nail polishes at home.

Wu said getting a manicure is often associated with confidence and self-esteem.

“Polished, well-groomed nails give women the appearance of being well-managed, and it can contribute to feeling that way internally,” she says.

67% said getting a manicure made them feel feminine, 58% felt refreshed and 45% said getting a manicure made them feel confident.

In fact, those surveyed said manicured nails are more important than getting a tan (46%), wearing nice accessories (25%), and wearing makeup (20%).

34% believe they can tell if a person is short or short. 32% said they know whether a person is “too popular” or dresses flashy. 27% think they can tell if someone really cares about them.
