A color shift can change everything. In this interview, tattoo artist Pokhy shares how she makes tattoos stand out.

When I first saw independent tattoo artist Pokhy’s work, I was in awe of her handling of color and opacity. Her tattoo doesn’t have to be small. But they still feel light and soft.

What impressed me the most was her blue tattoo. Green flowers, green snails, blue jellyfish, you name it. While blue isn’t as vibrant as red or other warm colors, it grabs your attention and differentiates her work from the rest.

That’s why I was so excited to talk to her about her inspiration, tattoo process, and style. In this interview with tattoo artist Pokhy, she will also share her thoughts on choosing a beautiful tattoo for herself.

The beginning of a career

Unlike many of his peers, tattoo artist Pokhy has no intention of becoming a tattoo artist upon graduation. The artist from Korea worked as a graphic designer for 7 years until she decided to pursue a new career.

“I accidentally got into tattooing. I used to work for a company where the work was really demanding. I have to work overtime a lot and it affects my health. So I have to rest. And that was when I first discovered tattooing.”

At their first meeting, Pokhy became increasingly obsessed with the idea of changing paths.

“Being a tattoo artist means your work will stay on someone else’s body for life. And it’s challenging yet satisfying.

So Pokhy started applying her graphic design skills to tattooing. But it was a rough start.

“At first I had a hard time finding my own style. And my job became even more difficult because of my lack of experience with ink and needles.”

But she never stopped practicing and perfecting. Over the past 5 years, she has transformed from a beginner to a rising star with over 100k followers on her Instagram. She is more productive and her work is growing.

But what hasn’t changed is that she constantly searches for her own style.

“I will always learn and improve. And I will apply what I have learned to reshape my style.”

Nature is recreated

Tattoo artist Pokhy describes her current style as delicate line tattoos on natural objects. But they often vary in color.

“I work a lot with flowers, butterflies and natural objects, most of which have thin lines. But I always try to make them unique.”

To do that, she chose cool tones. You can see a lot of blues, greens and purples in her work. But they attract your attention because they are less common than warm colors.

“I take a lot of inspiration from vintage posters and images. And when I see something in real life, I immediately consider whether it would be a good tattoo pattern or not.”

Once she has a theme, she will continue to look for the best color combination that fits the design.

“I think a harmonious color palette is essential. So no matter what I’m doing, I always choose bold colors that look good as well as being high quality. That’s how to make the tattoo stand out.”

The second technique is opacity. By depicting her objects as translucent, tattoo artist Pokhy can represent the structure of a flower, butterfly or sea turtle like an X-ray. It makes her tattoos captivating and unique. more unique.

Difficulties and challenges

Becoming a tattoo artist is not as glamorous as many people expect. On the contrary, tattooist Pokhy has faced rejection and misunderstanding. One of the hardest things to swallow was from her mother.

“At first, my mother hated my job. She did not support my changing career. But over the years, she has seen me grow as an artist. And she began to understand why I loved my job so much.”

And her mother got Pokhy a tattoo a month ago. It’s a tattoo that covers a scar. But it is also a form of recognition and trust. She liked the tattoo I gave her and it meant a lot to me.”

For Pokhy, being a good tattoo artist means being responsible to customers and being able to create high-quality work.

“I find it very difficult to draw a long, thin line but I have to overcome that by practicing because everything has to be perfect.”

Find the right tattoo design and tattoo artist

“If you’re getting your first tattoo, remember not to rush it. It’s better to keep looking instead of letting someone else tell you what to write.”

And not just with your first tattoos, think carefully before getting any tattoo, so you’ll be less likely to regret it later.

“Also, it’s important to find an artist that fits the style you want. For example, I don’t do Irezumi tattoos or classic tattoos because those are not my expertise. So make sure you browse through the artists’ portfolios to get a better idea of their style.”

As an aspiring tattoo artist, Pokhy plans to take her work to the next level.

“I really want to do huge tattoos like full sleeves, full backs and tattoos that cover the entire leg. With such a large canvas, I can unleash my creativity and push the limits.”
