Clubs with the longest title drought in Europe: Tottenham is nothing
Athletic Bilbao has just quenched its 40-year thirst for titles. However, many teams in Europe have a longer period without a championship than that.
“Tottenham’s title drought is actually not too long compared to most of the teams on this list, but when mentioning Spurs, people immediately think of a team with nothing,” Football Planet described. The London club won the League Cup in 2008, but the last time they reached the top of the FA Cup was in 1991. Not to mention, the “Rooster” national championship title has happened since 1961.
The last trophy that Newcastle United won in history was the Inter-Cities Fairs Cup in 1969. However, that is not counted as an official tournament. “Magpies” have not been able to touch the FA Cup since 1955, and the last national championship title came in 1927. In the 1990s, Newcastle had a chance to win the English football championship but unfortunately missed out.
Bologna’s title drought has lasted since 1974. However, things are getting better for this club. Former famous player Thiago Motta helps Bologna play great football at the present time. If there are no surprises, they will qualify to win tickets to the Champions League next season.
FC Koln is having a streak of 41 years without a title. Currently, this club is mainly fighting to stay in the Bundesliga. It is likely that FC Koln fans will have to wait many more seasons to see their beloved team touch a title.
The FA Cup win in 1973 was the last time Sunderland could sing a triumph. Jude Bellingham’s younger brother’s team is no longer a familiar face in the Premier League. “Black Cats” often struggle in the relegation battle in the English First Division.
Udinese won a total of… 0 major titles in its 128-year history of existence. In the 2010s, Udinese made its mark on the Italian football map with quality players like Alexis Sanchez or David Di Natale. Right now, they are a weak average team in Serie A.
Similarly, Celta Vigo in Spain has not won any major titles. Many times they showed that they were annoying troublemakers for Real Madrid or Barcelona. However, this team was rarely capable of challenging for the title.
Genoa is considered the oldest club in Italy, but its achievements are somewhat modest. They won the National Cup in 1937. At this time, a place in the European Cup was also considered a difficult task for Genoa.
Up to this point, the only national championship title in Sheffield United’s history came 126 years ago. They have not won the FA Cup in 99 years nor the League Cup.
