The incredible acceleration of the Japanese Aspark Owl really needs to be seen to be believed.

When you think of the world’s fastest supercars, chances are the Aspark Owl doesn’t immediately come to mind. We know, it’s a strange name for a supercar. It’s one of many electric vehicles in development, so the Japanese company needs to keep it going. At last year’s Frankfurt Auto Show, Aspark introduced a concept version of the Owl, which they claim will be the fastest accelerating car on earth when it makes its production, achieving 0-100 acceleration. km/h in less than two seconds.

This is made possible by a lightweight, full-carbon body and two 40kW electric motors that combine 429 horsepower and 563 pound-feet of torque combined with all wheels. That might not sound like much power, but the Aspark Owl weighs only 1,900 pounds. Unlike Tesla, which has provided live demos of the new Roadster’s phenomenal acceleration, there’s no evidence to support Aspark’s ambitious claims. Until now. A new video has emerged showing Aspark testing electric car acceleration on a working prototype. Result? Acceleration from 0-100 km/h takes just 1.92 seconds, which is equivalent to Tesla Roadster territory.

According to Autoblog, it even beat the Roadster in a separate race, achieving a 0-100 km/h time of 1.87 seconds. Using V-Box data provided by Aspark, Motor Trend also found that the electric supercar accelerated from 0-62 mph in 1.6 seconds when it reached rolling speed. At the same speed, the Tesla Roadster achieved the same speed of 2.28 seconds.

Those are some impressive statistics, but there are a few things to keep in mind. As Autoblog notes, there’s an on-screen speedometer or timer that records speed to validate Aspark’s claims. Second, the prototype has slick tires, but Aspark claims the road-legal version will still do 0-100km/h in two seconds. What’s most surprising about the supercar’s rapid acceleration is that the driver must reach speeds of 60 mph and bring the car back to a standstill over a short distance, as the test apparently had The sound of bees came from a parking lot behind a warehouse.
