Arsenal midfielder innocently used his hand to catch the ball in the penalty area but still escaped a penalty
Bayern should have received a penalty because of an unbelievable mistake by Arsenal midfielder Gabriel Magalhaes in the 2-2 draw in the Champions League quarterfinals first leg on the morning of April 10.
On social networks, fans shared a video recording David Raya making a pass to Gabriel in the restricted area at Emirates Stadium. However, the Brazilian midfielder blatantly bent down, picked up the ball and returned it to his teammate
Above, Bayern players simultaneously demanded a penalty. However, referee Nyberg refused and gave Raya a goal kick.
“An unbelievable mistake by the referee. Gabriel Magalhaes must be penalized for handball. It’s a crazy situation that can’t happen in professional football. What made me angrier was the referee’s explanation. He said it was just a ‘childish’ mistake, not worth it and would not blow a penalty because this was the quarterfinals of the Champions League,” coach Thomas Tuchel expressed his frustration after the match.
“I couldn’t imagine those were the referee’s words. It’s terrible. I don’t care if it’s a child or an adult making a mistake. I only know that it is a decision that directly affects Bayern,” the German military leader added.
Sharing the same opinion as Tuchel, former defender Rio Ferdinand also had to exclaim: “Oh my god, that’s a penalty.”
This is not the only controversial decision by referee Nyberg at the Emirates.
In the second half’s injury time, Bukayo Saka broke through into the penalty area and fell after a collision with Manuel Neuer. The slow-motion video clearly shows the Bayern goalkeeper tripping Saka. However, referee Nyberg refused to consult VAR and blew the whistle for timeout.
In a similar situation last weekend in the Premier League, Liverpool received a penalty when Aaron Wan-Bissaka missed the ball and accidentally tripped Harvey Elliott.
