The Messi–Ronaldo rivalry is a football rivalry between Argentine striker Lionel Messi and Portuguese striker Cristiano Ronaldo in the period from 2008 to present on both individual and collective levels.

Won a total of 13 Golden Ball awards (8 for Messi and 5 for Ronaldo, the two players with the most wins) and 10 European Golden Shoe awards (6 for Messi and 4 for Ronaldo), both The two are both highly regarded not only as the two best players of their generation, but by most of the sport, including players, writers and fans, as two of the Greatest player of all time. They are two of the most decorated footballers ever, having won a total of 79 trophies (Messi 44, Ronaldo 35) throughout their professional careers to date, and regularly breaking the barrier of 50 goals in a season. They are two of only 28 players in the history of the sport to score more than 700 goals in their careers for club and country. Journalists and pundits regularly debate the individual merits of both players in an attempt to determine who they believe is the best player in modern football or ever. Regardless of individual preference, football critics unanimously agree that both are the best players of their generation, significantly outperforming their peers. Messi’s dribbling skills are among the best in football history, while Ronaldo’s leadership and influence in big matches, especially under pressure, are highly regarded around the world.

The competition between Messi and Ronaldo has inspired football lovers around the world. Although a portion of Ronaldo’s fans often criticize Messi and vice versa, both players have respect for each other. Ronaldo said: “Competing with Messi makes me better” [4] and Messi also said: “The special competition with Ronaldo will last forever!” [5] . The excellence of the two individuals caused the time they dominated world football to be called the “Ronaldo – Messi Era”. [6]

Over the years, it has been said that the rivalry between Real Madrid and Barcelona is “encapsulated” by the personal rivalry between Ronaldo and Messi, [15] [16] there has never been a scoreless El Clásico win between the two. [17]
