INEOS, the owner of Man Utd, had to speak out to reassure fans about the news that the club would not be able to participate in the 2024/25 Europa League.

According to Daily Mail, Manchester United is at risk of not being able to participate in the Europa League next season. The reason is because of UEFA’s regulations on clubs with common owners.

“We are negotiating with UEFA to clarify everything. INEOS is confident that it will find a solution for both Man Utd and Nice,” INEOS said.

Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s INEOS Group has just acquired 27.7% of Man Utd’s shares. This number will exceed the 30% threshold, as INEOS is planning to invest an additional 238 million pounds for the Old Trafford club.

Not only Man Utd, INEOS also holds the majority of shares in Nice, the club is playing in Ligue 1 and has just had a ticket to the Europa League according to the 5th place team.

According to regulations from UEFA, clubs with the same owner (holding 30% or more shares) will not be able to participate in the same tournament. If this scenario occurs, the team with a higher ranking in the national championship will have priority, the remaining team will have to go down to play in a lower tournament. With the current situation, if determined to be the same owner as Nice (5th place in Ligue 1), MU (8th place in the Premier League) will have to go down to the Conference League.

According to Daily Mail, INEOS will do everything to keep its stake in MU below 30% to avoid violating regulations from UEFA, by canceling the 238 million pound investment.

Before that, MU saved the poor season by winning the FA Cup. In the English Premier League, 2 Europa League spots are allocated to the 5th ranked team (Tottenham) and the FA Cup champion (Man Utd). The 6th ranked team, Chelsea, will drop down to play in the 3rd division cup tournament, the Conference League.
