Leverkusen officially won the championship undefeated all season, Bayern lost the runner-up position
Coach Xabi Alonso’s Bayer Leverkusen completed a historic undefeated Bundesliga season.
After winning the Bundesliga championship a few weeks ago, this is an opportunity for Bayer Leverkusen to share the historic silver plate with the home fans. The BayArena home team took the lead over Augsburg thanks to Victor Boniface in the 12th minute, before Robert Andrich doubled the gap 15 minutes later.
Augsburg held on to hope of a comeback in the second half when Mert Komur shortened the score in the 62nd minute, but Bayer Leverkusen maintained a 1-goal advantage until the end to win 2-1.
Bayer Leverkusen became the first team to go undefeated in a Bundesliga season, gaining 90 points after 34 matches, with 28 wins and 6 draws. Broadly speaking, in the top 5 European leagues in the 21st century, coach Alonso’s team is the third team to be undefeated all season after Arsenal (2003/04) and Juventus (2011/12).
Bayer Leverkusen is also on its way to winning an unprecedented “treble” in history as the first team not to lose a single match. Coach Alonso’s team has been unbeaten in the last 51 matches and reached the Europa League final, where they will face Serie A’s Atalanta on May 23. Three days later, Bayer Leverkusen will meet Kaiserslautern in the German Cup final.
For Granit Xhaka, this is the first domestic title of his career. The Swiss international even broke the Bundesliga record in a season for most touches of the ball (3,648), most passes (3,259) and most accurate passes (3,003).
Meanwhile, Bayern Munich lost the runner-up position to Stuttgart after the “Gray Tigers” lost 2-4 to Hoffenheim on the closing day of the season. This is the worst performance of the home team at Alianz Arena since 2011.
That means Bayern Munich will not be able to participate in the German Super Cup match at the beginning of next season. Harry Kane will have to wait until at least May next year to win the first club title of his career.
