Production of the BMW i8 is expected to end in April this year as the company wants to focus on more electrified models, including the iX3 crossoʋer, i4 fastback and iNext crossoʋer.

A company spokesperson confirmed the i8’s impending demise to Autocar.

Reports suggest the i8 will be replaced within the next few years after the production version of the M Next concept.

Launched globally in 2013, the i8 took its design from the 2009 Vision EfficiencyDynamics. While the concept car is a turbocharged-diesel plug-in hybrid (PHEV), the production i8 has a 3-cylinder gasoline engine The 1.5-liter turbocharged engine is mated to an electric motor.

Together they generate a total of 266kW and 570Nм. With a 7.1 kWh lithium-ion battery pack, the i8 has a pure electric range of 37 km according to NEDC standards.

In 2018, the electric motor gained a few kilowatts, bringing total power to 275kW, while a larger 11.6kWh lithium-ion battery boosted the car’s electric range to 55km.

If the news about the i8 is true, it would make the i8 Roadster a compact car. Although a concept was teased in 2012, it wasn’t until 2018 that the title went into production.

Thanks to the foldable soft top, the Roadster has just two seats.
