The birth is a key factor for a small surviving population of a rare lion species that has become extinct in the wild.

The triplets, all female, were born in Dvυr Kralove park.

They took their first steps outdoors this week under the careful supervision of their mother, Khalila. They have not yet been named.

One of the largest lion species to have ever lived in Africa, the Barbary lion was almost completely wiped out from its activities.

Mapy was killed by gladiators during Roman times, while hunting was complicit in their extinction afterward.

It is believed that the Barbary lion became extinct in the wild in the mid-1960s. Only a few dozens survive in Morocco’s sacred collections.

The Czech Zoo is part of a worldwide captive breeding program that coordinates efforts to maintain their survival in captivity.

Their global population is therefore estimated to be around 100.
