the difference between an electric Macan versus a gas-powered Macan costs $18,900 more

""""

The Porsche Macan has always been an expensive car. The electric version is much more expensive — nearly $20,000 more expensive than the previous gas-powered version.

At the lower price point, the Macan 4 costs $80,450, $18,900 more expensive than the current base Macan model. Meanwhile, the new Macan Turbo has an MSRP of $106,650, $18,500 more than the top internally-engined model, the GTS. In general, electric cars are much more expensive than comparable gas-powered cars, but this is a big gap. And the Macan certainly won’t qualify for any federal rebates on purchase. We wonder if the existence of the Macan 4 heralds a future beyond the Macan. A spokesperson told us “[a]t this time, we have no further information about future participants.”

To be fair, the Macan EV models offer much more power and performance than their internal equivalents – the Macan Turbo EV has 630 horsepower, almost 200 horsepower more than the GTS. But the Macan 4 is still $6900 more expensive than the gas-powered Macan S.

The new Macan is at least cheaper than the Taycan, which starts at $92,250 for the rear-wheel-drive model. And if you buy the Macan TurɄo instead of the Taycan TurɄo, it will cost you $55,500 and get 14 more horsepower. So I suppose it’s a relationship.

This doesn’t mean the Macan EV won’t be worth the money for its target audience. We can’t say that for sure until we drive it, but Porsche’s history tells us that the new Macan should look and drive great. Dynamically, the gas-powered Macan is well above its class and the move to all-electric power would enhance it further. It feels like a lot of money by Porsche standards.

Porsche will continue to produce the internal combustion engine Macan for the United States for the foreseeable future. So buyers here will still have a more affordable option.
