Back in the early 1970s, the concept of a low-cost, mid-range sports car didn’t exist, at least until the Porsche 914 was born. Building on the success of the world-leading 917, Porsche wanted to capitalize on those racetrack victories by creating a new classy sports car to replace the aging 912. So these two brands teamed up to produce the minimalist sports car you see today.

While the six-cylinder 914-6 has been beloved by those in the know for some time, the standard Volkswageп-engineed 914 — like this example from 1974 — remains popular with many. First, the VW 411E produced the same power output as the 356 Super 90, which in practical terms it substituted perfectly for this light sports car. The design has also aged considerably, especially when it’s a cheerful yellow like this one. Even better, the fact that the 914 existed in the shadow of its more powerful siblings at a very long price remained reasonable compared to other air-cooled Porsches. So if you want to experience the evolution of the mid-size light vehicle category, be sure to check out Oseпat’s Collector Cars in action on March 27.
