1966 Ford GT40 MkI Road Car Mecum Kissimmee Auction 2024 road-going version of the Mark 1 GT40

The Ford GT40 ranks among the most iconic race cars in automotive history, including its story on the big screen in the film Ford and Ferrari. Now you have the chance to own one of 30 rare road legal models. This is especially attractive because it received a revival from RUF, the company best known for its work with Porsche cars. Mecumam Auctions is selling this special machine at its 2024 auction in Kissiммee, Florida, taking place January 2-14.

This particular car is the road version of the Mark 1 GT40. These cars had smoother handling than later racing versions, including the lack of additional roof air intakes and the absence of upper bars behind the side windows. The dark blue is a perfect color because it somewhat resembles the racer’s classic Gulf Blue paint scheme without replicating that iconic shade.

The auction listing refers to the RUF restoration with photo documentation. We found this interesting because the company has a close relationship with Porsche, including on models like the CTR Yellowbird. We’ve reached out to the business for more details.

“[RUF] actually restored that GT40 in 1996 for a special customer of theirs,” a spokesperson told Motor1. “In fact, they restored all of his cars. Although quite rare, RUF can restore cars outside the Porsche realm if the customer requests it.”

The interior is similarly attractive. This car is right-hand drive, but the gear lever is on the right side of the dryer `between the seat and the door, not in the center as you would expect. We wondered whether this setup would make climbing behind the wheel difficult.

The layout of the device looks like a racing car. The tachometer is located right behind the steering wheel, which makes a lot of sense for a competition machine. Gauges measure things like oil pressure and water temperature surrounding it. Meanwhile, the speedometer is on the left side and looks like a complete afterthought.

Power comes from Ford’s 289 cc V8 engine. The engine is beautiful, with its intake featuring two rows of shiny speed stacks above the Weber carburetors. The missing exhaust pipes curl around the engine like a nest of snakes. The transmission is a high-speed manual.

The precious owner has kept this GT40 for nearly 30 years. At one point, the machine belonged to racing driver Uberto Maglioli, whose career included competing for the Scuderia Ferrari Formula One team in the 1950s.
